ITINERARY: FINALBORGO – SAN GIOVANNI CASTLE – GOVONE CASTLE – PERTI – “CINQUE CAMPINILI” CHURCH

By car (from Finale Ligure’s train station FF SS): you take the first way out to the right in the roundabout, and you drive on the national road Aurelia (Strada Statale SS1), direction Ventimiglia, for about 350 m. Then, you turn right to the SP490 until the roundabout in Finalborgo. You take the first way out and then you turn right again to reach the parking area of “Porta Testa” in Finalborgo. (2,3 Km).

Trail mark: red ball

The trail is easily walkable and well signaled.

The uphill street starts from the square “Tribunale” and it’s called “Via Berretta” or “Strada della Regina” (Road of the Queen) and it was built in 1666 to connect Finale with the Spanish domain in the valley of the Po.

After the first 400 meters, you will cross the “Porta mezzaluna” (crescent shaped door), one of the four ancient entrances through the walls of Finalborgo. Over the hill on you left, and  just a few steps later, rises the castle called “San Giovanni”.  Afterwards, following the street, you will reach a fork: take the left (uphill trail) to reach the second Castle, “Govone”. The two castles are usually closed and only accessible during special events or guided tours.  After the visit to the outside of the second castle, turn back and take the narrow trail on your left. It leads you back on the main trail, just a few meters past the le last “castle fork” we mentioned. Back to the main trail you keep going (on your left) to reach the square of the little Village “Perti Alto” where you can take some water to drink from the fountain and take a look to the Church of “Saint Eusebio”. You proceed through the paved road (direction North) for about 300 meters to finally arrive to the famous Church “dei Cinque Campanili”.

Turn around and follow back your steps to get back to Finalborgo.
