VEZZI PORTIO – ROCCHE BIANCHE (Cliff)

ITINERARY: VEZZI PORTIO – ROCCHE BIANCHE (Cliff)

By car (from Finale Ligure’s train station FF SS): you take the national road Aurelia (Strada Statale 1) in the direction of Savona for 1,6 Km until the fork with the SP8 (Via Calvisio, before the tunnel). Continue along this way until the fork on the right hand side signaled to “Vezzi Portio”. Take this road (SP8 BIS) and drive on it for 3.4 Km to reach another large crossroad where you have to go left. Go left again at the next fork join the street “Via San Giorgio”, cross the village to the town hall. Past the town hall there is a narrow street that climbs the hill on the right. Take this street and park about 500 m later, when the paved road turns into an unpaved one. (Anyway the signal “Rocche Bianche” appears all along that final part and you can easily follow it).

The car journey is 11,4 km long.

Trail classification: trail of naturalistic and historic interest

Level:  Easy – Moderate

Duration: 2 h 30 min        Length: 7.5    Km        Elevation gain: 228 m

Trail mark: red circle with a yellow mark inside; occasionally sided by the AV “Alta Via Golfo dell’Isola’s” mark, BLUE – GREEN stripes.

The trail is wide and easily walkable.

The unpaved road goes on for 900 m to reach a large fork: stay on the right side. Ignore the second fork (200 m later) and keep going in the large unpaved road.

A large filed that is used as a picnic area rises a bit before a third fork: this time you leave the large unpaved road to join a smaller trail on the right. This trail crosses another paved road (so pay attention!) and then the trail mark changes.

Trail mark: two red squares.

The trail is now wide and easily walkable but not well signaled.

The first stretch goes for 400 m towards another big crossroad: take the first trail on the left.

From now on the trail mark almost disappears.

The trail goes now through a thick wooded area and then trough wide open green hills and ends to a last fork by a big house block. Now stay on your left side and you keep going for about 500 m to reach the cliff “Rocche Bianche”  where you can enjoy a beautiful view over the Finalese’s hinterland.

The “Rocche Bianche” was the spot of a skirmish between the partisans and the German troops in November, 1944.Now a monument rises here to commemorate the partisans who died during the battle.

Turn around and follow back your steps to get back to the starting point and the car.
